Greystone Mansion & Gardens is a city-owned historic estate on a hillside in Beverly Hills, not a private residence open for unrestricted tours. The grounds cover 18.3 acres and combine the mansion, terraced gardens, public paths and views across the Los Angeles basin. The City of Beverly Hills describes the park as a place for visitors, community gatherings and special events. That mix explains its appeal: a visit can be a garden walk, an architectural stop or a look at a site often seen on screen.
The property began as a family home for Edward “Ned” Doheny Jr., son of oil producer Edward L. Doheny, and his wife Lucy. The elder Doheny gave the couple a 12.58-acre parcel as a wedding gift in 1926. Construction began in February 1927; Ned, Lucy and their five children moved in during September 1928. The city records the estate’s original construction cost as more than $3.16 million, with over $1.23 million for the mansion alone—figures that convey the scale of the project in its era.
