At about 8,150 feet above sea level, Tenaya Lake is one of Yosemite National Park’s most accessible high-country lakes when Tioga Road is open. Granite domes and peaks rise around its blue water, and the shoreline feels markedly different from the busy valley floor below. The National Park Service calls it the largest lake in Yosemite’s frontcountry and notes its popularity for summer picnics, swimming and kayaking. The lake is not a developed resort: visitors come for a day outdoors, with simple facilities at several pullouts rather than a village of shops and services.
The setting is part of Yosemite’s glacial landscape. Ice shaped the high Sierra’s basins and polished granite, leaving the open slopes and rock forms that frame the water today. The NPS names the lake for Chief Tenaya, an Indigenous leader who lived in Yosemite Valley at the time of the Mariposa Battalion’s invasion. That brief place-name history belongs to a much broader story of Native communities and displacement in Yosemite; it should not be reduced to a scenic anecdote. The shoreline’s beauty and its cultural history meet in a place visitors can experience on foot, from a picnic table or from the water.
