Sisupalgarh, on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar in Odisha, is among eastern India's most important early historic urban sites. The database label “Chambers of Sisupalgad” refers to remains within this much larger fortified settlement, not to a conventional palace attraction. Its value lies in the scale and organization still visible in earthworks, gateways, structural traces and monumental stone columns.
The Archaeological Survey of India's excavations led by B. B. Lal in 1948 established a long sequence of occupation beginning around the third century BCE and continuing into the early centuries CE. Later fieldwork refined the chronology and examined urban organization. The roughly square fortified enclosure, with major gateways set into defensive ramparts, suggests deliberate planning rather than an unstructured accumulation of houses.
