The Sacri Monti are not one mountain or one shrine, but a network of nine devotional complexes spread across Piedmont and Lombardy. Their chapels, sculptures, paintings and paths turn landscape into a sequence of stories. The site marker for this entry is at Varallo, the earliest and one of the most extensive examples, but UNESCO’s property includes eight other places as well. Understanding that distinction helps visitors plan: a trip to Varallo is an encounter with one remarkable complex, not a visit to all nine Sacred Mountains.
UNESCO describes the property as nine separate complexes in northern Italy: Varallo, Crea, Orta, Varese, Oropa, Ossuccio, Ghiffa, Domodossola and Valperga. Most of their chapels and architectural features were created from the late sixteenth through the seventeenth centuries, although Varallo began earlier. The ensembles were dedicated to different aspects of Christian belief and were placed in mountain or lakeside settings. Their paths connect architecture with terrain, inviting pilgrims to move through a physical landscape while following a religious narrative.
