Naumburger Dom — Street View

Discover Naumburg Cathedral in Germany: Uta’s famous statue, early Gothic sculpture, Romanesque architecture, seasonal visiting hours and the Saale valley setting.

Naumburg Cathedral rises above the old town of Naumburg in Saxony-Anhalt, in Germany’s Saale-Unstrut region. Its four towers are a familiar landmark, but the building rewards a closer look: Romanesque stonework, early Gothic design, medieval sculpture and stained glass meet within one church that remains an active Protestant parish. Most of the structure visitors see today dates from the thirteenth century. UNESCO inscribed Naumburg Cathedral on the World Heritage List in 2018, recognizing it as an exceptional record of medieval architecture and artistic exchange in Europe.

The cathedral is not a single-style monument frozen in time. Its two choirs frame a Romanesque nave, while chapels and related buildings reflect later periods of worship and patronage. UNESCO describes the building as a transition from late Romanesque to early Gothic. That change is visible in the different spatial effects of the east and west ends: the older Romanesque character contrasts with the more sculptural, light-filled west choir. A visit becomes richer when you look for these transitions rather than treating every arch and statue as belonging to one moment.
