Museum Island — Street View

Plan a Museum Island visit in Berlin: five historic museums, distinct collections, current opening information and the announced Pergamonmuseum reopening.

Berlin’s Museum Island is small enough to cross on foot, yet the story held in its buildings spans more than a century of collecting, architecture and political change. The Spree-side ensemble is not one museum with five wings: UNESCO recognizes five purpose-built museum buildings, each planned for a different collection and joined into a larger cultural project. The island was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1999. Today its historic character remains visible, but renovation continues to shape what visitors can see, particularly at the Pergamonmuseum.

The sequence began with the Altes Museum, which opened in 1830 and was designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel. The Neues Museum followed between 1843 and 1855, then the Nationalgalerie—now called the Alte Nationalgalerie—between 1867 and 1876. The Kaiser Friedrich Museum, now the Bode-Museum, opened in 1904, and the Pergamonmuseum was completed in 1930. UNESCO describes the five buildings, erected between 1824 and 1930, as an unusually coherent record of changing museum design and the idea of a public institution for art and archaeology.
