At 19 Coppergate Walk in central York, the JORVIK Viking Centre stands above the ground where one of Britain’s most influential urban archaeological excavations took place. Between 1976 and 1981, archaeologists uncovered houses, workshops and backyards belonging to the Viking-age city known as Jorvik. The visitor attraction grew directly from those discoveries: rather than presenting a generic Viking village, it uses evidence excavated beneath this particular street to interpret a real neighbourhood.
The Coppergate site mattered because waterlogged, peaty deposits preserved organic material that usually disappears. Wooden objects, plant remains, leather, textiles and other fragile traces helped researchers investigate how people worked, built, traded and managed daily life. The centre’s own excavation account reports roughly 40,000 archaeological contexts and about 20,000 individually significant objects. Those figures describe the scale of the dig, not a promise that every object is on display; the attraction selects finds and evidence to tell a legible story.
