Independence Hall stands on Chestnut Street in Philadelphia’s historic district, inside Independence National Historical Park. Visitors enter a brick Georgian building, but the significance is not just its architecture: the Pennsylvania State House became the meeting place where leaders argued over independence and a new form of government. Its name came later, after the events that made the building a symbol. Today the National Park Service interprets it as a place where civic ideals were debated, negotiated and tested.
Construction began in 1732, and the Pennsylvania State House was completed in 1753. It originally housed the colony’s executive, legislative and judicial branches. The building’s Assembly Room was a working chamber furnished for Pennsylvania’s government, not a theatrical room built for tourists. The NPS describes the Georgian design and later preservation as part of the experience; looking at the rooms in that context helps visitors picture a public institution before it became a national shrine.
