The Chaîne des Puys is a striking line of volcanic landforms in central France, west of Clermont-Ferrand. The name is often used for the chain itself, but the UNESCO property is broader: the “Chaîne des Puys - Limagne fault tectonic arena” also includes the Limagne Fault and the inverted relief of the Montagne de la Serre. Inscribed in 2018, the property presents related features of the West European Rift, a system whose formation followed the rise of the Alps about 35 million years ago. The value of the landscape lies in how its volcanoes, fault escarpment and uplifted ground can be read together as evidence of continental crust stretching and breaking.
Local management describes about 80 visible volcanoes arranged over roughly 32 kilometres, with the chain about four kilometres wide. These dimensions correct a common overstatement that the volcanic line is 45 kilometres long. The volcanoes formed much later than the rift itself: official accounts place their activity broadly between about 95,000 and 8,400 years ago, while UNESCO nomination material gives an upper age near 8,600 years. Those figures express a geological range, not a single eruption date. The youngest edifices are geologically recent, but the area is not an active erupting attraction or a place where a future eruption can be timed.
