Bukchang Concentration Camp — Street View

Bukchang, identified by UN investigators as Camp 18, is a documented North Korean detention complex—not a visitor destination.

The place widely called Bukchang concentration camp appears in United Nations reporting as political prison camp No. 18, or Camp 18, in South Pyongan Province. It is not a tourist attraction, memorial open to the public or place that independent travelers can responsibly visit. Its importance is documentary: testimony from former prisoners, analysis by human-rights investigators and commercial satellite imagery have made the site part of the international record of detention in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

North Korea does not permit independent inspection of the political prison system and has denied that such camps exist. That denial, combined with restricted access, means precise statements about current prisoner numbers, internal boundaries and operating conditions require exceptional caution. Aerial and satellite views can identify compounds, mines, housing, fences and landscape change, but an image cannot by itself establish what is happening to individual people on the ground.
