Anyang Pavilion stands within Anyang Art Park, a wooded valley south of Seoul where architecture, sculpture and walking paths form an open-air cultural route. Designed by Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza and completed for the Anyang Public Art Project, the low white building is both an artwork and an orientation point. Its curving internal spaces frame movement rather than behaving like a conventional rectangular gallery.
Anyang City dates the art park’s formal opening to November 2005 and lists 54 artworks comprising 203 individual elements, along with a 2.3-kilometre trail, exhibition space and landscape facilities. The project transformed an older recreation area between Gwanaksan and Samseongsan into a setting where contemporary commissions coexist with forest, stream, temples and local heritage.
