Brú na Bóinne — Street View

Plan a visit to Brú na Bóinne: explore its Neolithic tomb landscape, understand Newgrange’s solstice light and book official guided access.

Brú na Bóinne is often introduced through Newgrange, the grass-covered passage tomb whose entrance stone carries famous spiral carvings. But the UNESCO property in County Meath is a much wider archaeological landscape, shaped by communities over thousands of years along a bend in the River Boyne. Knowth and Dowth belong to the same story, as do dozens of less conspicuous monuments. The name is Irish; UNESCO’s English title describes the “Archaeological Ensemble of the Bend of the Boyne.” A worthwhile visit begins by looking beyond one celebrated chamber.

The principal passage tombs date to around 3200 BCE, according to Heritage Ireland, and stand among Europe’s most important Neolithic monuments. UNESCO records about 90 known monuments within the property, including the three major tomb groups and around forty satellite passage graves. The numbers describe an archaeological landscape, not a single fenced attraction. The river, ridges, fields and monuments form a setting in which burial, ceremony, social organization and movement through the landscape all mattered.
