The Areopagus is a low limestone outcrop immediately northwest of the Acropolis, overlooking the Ancient Agora and the modern city. Its name is commonly translated as the Hill of Ares, and the place is associated with Athens’ ancient council and judicial traditions. In antiquity, the Council of the Areopagus was an aristocratic body whose powers changed as Athenian government evolved. The hill is linked in literary tradition with trials involving gods and heroes, while the New Testament’s Acts of the Apostles places Paul’s address to Athenians before the Areopagus. Scholars debate whether that wording refers specifically to the hill, the council as an institution or both; visitors should treat the modern plaque as commemoration rather than proof of an exact speaking spot.
