The Trulli of Puglia

(τροῦλλος trûllos)

The Trulli of Alberobello are unique conical or pyramid-shaped dwellings found in the Puglia region of southern Italy. These charming stone structures, built entirely without mortar, are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a major tourist attraction. The Trulli were traditionally built by farmers and laborers who needed houses that were inexpensive and easy to construct. The dry-stone technique used in their construction is thought to have originated in prehistoric times. The thick walls of the Trulli provide excellent insulation, keeping them cool in the summer and warm in the winter. There are over 1,500 Trulli in Alberobello, concentrated in two neighborhoods: Rione Monti and Rione Aia Piccola. These neighborhoods are a maze of winding streets and alleyways lined with Trulli, some of which are still inhabited today. Others have been converted into shops, restaurants, and even hotels. Here are some of the things you can do in Alberobello: Explore the Trulli neighborhoods on foot, taking in the unique architecture and charming atmosphere. Visit the Trullo Sovrano, the largest and most elaborate Trullo in Alberobello. It is now a museum that houses a collection of artifacts and exhibits on the history of the Trulli. Take a cooking class and learn how to make traditional Pugliese dishes. Enjoy a glass of local wine at a cafe or restaurant in one of the Trulli piazzas. Attend the annual Festival dei Trulli e delle Luci, which takes place in Alberobello every September. The festival features traditional music, dance, and food, as well as light displays that illuminate the Trulli. If you're looking for a unique and charming travel destination, Alberobello is definitely worth adding to your list. The Trulli are truly a sight to behold, and the town itself has a relaxed and inviting atmosphere.
