Tanghou Beach: Beigan’s open horizon

Tanghou Beach, also called Tanghoudao Beach, stretches along the western side of Beigan in Taiwan’s Matsu Islands. Its broad golden sand and open bay create a softer counterpoint to Beigan’s granite villages and military tunnels. Aircraft approaching the nearby airport add an unusual element to the landscape, while the sea and offshore islands remain the dominant view.

The Matsu National Scenic Area places the beach at Hou’ao Village and lists it as open all day. That means there is no ticket gate, not that conditions are always suitable for swimming. Wind, waves, fog and seasonal weather can change quickly in the Taiwan Strait, and visitors should follow any warning signs or local instructions.

A beach inside Beigan’s island story

Tanghou is included on the official Beigan War and Peace Park bus route, connecting it with preserved military sites, Bishan viewpoint, Qiaozi and Qinbi villages. This makes the beach useful as more than a stand-alone photo stop. In one day, travellers can move from twentieth-century defence history to Mindong stone architecture and an exposed maritime coast.

Bishan, the highest viewpoint in the Matsu Islands, looks down toward Tanghou Beach, Beigan Airport and surrounding islets. Seeing the shore from above before walking on it clarifies Beigan’s compact geography. Fog can erase the panorama, however, so schedules should remain flexible rather than treating clear views as guaranteed.

Getting to Tanghou Beach

Beigan is reached by air from Taipei or by inter-island ferry, both subject to weather disruption. Once on the island, local buses, taxis and rented transport connect the settlements. The scenic-area authority identifies the beach entrance from the main road in Hou’ao; parking and turning space should be used considerately on narrow island roads.

Safe and responsible visiting

Bring sun protection, drinking water and a wind layer even in warm weather. There may not be lifeguard coverage or full beach services, so never infer that calm-looking water is supervised. Keep clear of airport infrastructure and obey all restricted-area signs.
