History of Tamerza Golden Canyon

The Tamerza Canyon has a rich history that dates back to ancient times. Once an important trade route for caravans travelling across the Sahara Desert, the Oued el Abid River carved out the canyon, leaving behind the stunning rock formations that we see today.

The site belonged under the name of Ad Turres to the Saharan roads connecting Tébessa to Gafsa. It was then in charge of the defense of the borders of the Roman Empire before becoming the seat of a bishopric under the Byzantines. We can also find ancient materials in some houses in the village.

The Tamerza Canyon is located near the village of Tamerza in the Tozeur Governorate of Tunisia.
