About Cooperative Winery of Nemea

Nemea Wine Cooperative: Agiorgitiko through collective work

The Nemea Wine Cooperative was founded on 11 May 1937 with 70 members, organizing growers around the native Agiorgitiko grape. In 1959 it worked with Greece’s Wine Institute on the first experimental bottling of Agiorgitiko, an important step from bulk production toward a named regional wine identity.

Today the cooperative reports more than 400 grower-members. Its scale makes the winery useful for understanding how many small vineyards contribute to PDO Nemea, one of Greece’s defining red-wine appellations.

Altitude and the character of Nemea wine

Nemea vineyards extend roughly from 200 to 850 metres, and differences in elevation, soil and microclimate influence ripening, acidity and wine style. Agiorgitiko can produce fresh reds and rosés as well as structured, oak-aged wines. A tasting should emphasize those contrasts rather than treating the grape as one fixed flavour.

The cooperative’s facilities include production areas, bottling lines and an underground cellar with French oak barrels. Guided visits explain vinification and compare aged and unaged labels, followed by a tasting accompanied by cheese according to the official visitor page.

Reservations, hours and price

The visitor-specific page currently lists the wine market Monday–Friday 08:00–15:30 and Saturday 08:00–14:00, closed Sunday and national holidays. It lists the guided tour and tasting at €7 per person and requires advance reservation through +30 27460 22210.

A separate contact page shows slightly different office hours, so visitors should confirm the booked tour time directly. Harvest and production can also affect access. Never arrive expecting a cellar tour merely because the retail shop is open.

Planning a responsible wine visit

The cooperative is at 130 Efstathios Papakonstantinou Street in Nemea. Driving is convenient for vineyard travel, but the tasting requires a designated driver or arranged transport. Age restrictions and identification rules apply.

  • Reserve the tour in advance and reconfirm the time.
  • Use a designated driver and taste responsibly.
  • Ask about current vintages rather than expecting every label.
  • Pair the winery with Ancient Nemea, allowing separate hours for each.

Harvest normally falls from the middle of September into October depending on vineyard altitude. That makes autumn particularly revealing, but it is also the busiest production period. Visitors must not expect unrestricted movement around working machinery, and confirmed tours may follow altered routes to protect both guests and cellar operations.

Tasting vocabulary should remain personal and precise. Guides can explain acidity, tannin, oak and vintage variation without declaring one style universally best. Visitors may spit samples, decline pours or purchase nothing beyond the booked experience; responsible tasting is participation, not a challenge to finish every glass.

The cooperative tells a story larger than one bottle. Growers, altitude and shared infrastructure turned Agiorgitiko into a regional identity with measurable history since 1937. A reserved visit connects wine in the glass to the agricultural community that produced it.
