Venice is often presented as a collection of masterpieces, but its real achievement is an urban system built in constant negotiation with water. UNESCO's “Venice and its Lagoon” property, inscribed in 1987, covers the historic city and the wider lagoon. The settlement developed from the fifth century across 118 small islands and grew into a major maritime power by the tenth. Canals became streets, islands became neighborhoods and hydraulic knowledge made dense urban life possible on unstable ground.
St Mark's Basilica, the Doge's Palace and the Grand Canal are essential, yet the World Heritage value also lies in modest houses, workshops, churches, campi and lagoon settlements. Venice connected Latin Europe with Byzantine and Islamic worlds, while painters including Bellini, Giorgione, Titian, Tintoretto and Veronese changed European approaches to colour and light. To see only Piazza San Marco is to miss the social and environmental machine that sustained those achievements.
