The popular nickname, “four dishes and one soup,” captures the composition with an image from the table. Yet the photograph is only a beginning. These are substantial communal houses, and their relationship to paths, cultivated terraces and family life explains more than the familiar aerial pattern alone.
The cluster stands in Shuyang township, Nanjing County, in the southwestern part of Fujian, China. This Nanjing is a county in Fujian, not the city of the same name in Jiangsu. The provincial housing department’s June 2026 account places Tianluokeng within a wider landscape of traditional villages, where earthen construction and agriculture remain connected. The terraces surrounding the houses belong to that story, rather than serving merely as a backdrop.
