Songo Mnara Island — Street View

Plan a Songo Mnara Island visit in Tanzania: Swahili trading history, coral-stone ruins, UNESCO status, boat access from Kilwa and responsible travel advice.

Songo Mnara preserves the ruins of a medieval Swahili trading town on a small island off Tanzania’s southern coast. Coral-built houses, mosques and public spaces survive within a maritime landscape that once connected East Africa with Arabia, India and wider Indian Ocean commerce. The island shares a UNESCO World Heritage inscription with nearby Kilwa Kisiwani.

Kilwa Kisiwani became one of the most powerful ports on the East African coast, controlling trade in goods that moved between the African interior and Indian Ocean markets. Songo Mnara developed later and on a smaller scale, offering complementary archaeological evidence for urban life, trade and Islamic culture in the Swahili world.
