San Andrés is often sold through a single postcard image: bright water, pale sand and a reef offshore. That picture is real but incomplete. The island is one part of Colombia’s Department of San Andrés, Providencia and Santa Catalina, a scattered Caribbean territory of inhabited islands, cays and marine ecosystems. The reserve designation applies to the archipelago, not this island alone.
The departmental geographic reference describes San Andrés as a narrow island about 13 kilometres from north to south and roughly three kilometres across, with an area of about 27 square kilometres. Its central ridge rises to La Loma, while settlements, roads and beaches follow the coast. This compact scale makes short excursions possible, but it does not mean every place is walkable: heat, traffic, weather and the distance between neighborhoods matter. Plan by area rather than assuming that a map’s straight-line distance tells the whole story.
