Red Square stretches along the eastern wall of the Moscow Kremlin, facing the historic trading district of Kitai-gorod. The name can make it sound like one monument, but the square is an urban stage edged by buildings from different periods. Visitors encounter the Kremlin wall on one side, the State Historical Museum and the Resurrection Gate at the northern end, GUM and other former trading rows to the east, and St Basil’s Cathedral at the southern end. Its power comes from seeing these landmarks together, not from any single façade.
The square and Kremlin form one UNESCO World Heritage property, inscribed in 1990. UNESCO describes Red Square as closely associated with the Kremlin and places it beneath the fortress’s eastern wall. The property connects medieval defenses, Orthodox churches, palaces and later civic buildings. This shared designation is useful context: Red Square is not a separate theme park, and a walk across the paving reveals how Moscow’s political, religious and commercial centers grew beside one another.
