Pura Tirta Empul is a Hindu temple complex in Manukaya village, Tampaksiring District, Gianyar Regency, in central Bali. Its name refers to a sacred spring that rises from the ground, and water remains the defining feature of the site: it feeds bathing pools used for purification as well as temple spaces for prayer. The complex is both an active place of worship and a cultural destination. Visitors come to understand its architecture and history, but should remember that ceremonies and daily devotion take priority over sightseeing.
The setting adds context. The Bali Ministry of Religious Affairs places Tirta Empul about 40 kilometres northeast of Denpasar, in the historic Tampaksiring area, which also includes the former presidential palace and Pura Gunung Kawi. The official national tourism guide estimates the temple is about 52 kilometres from Ngurah Rai International Airport and around a 90-minute drive, although traffic can change that substantially. The spring, temple courtyards and surrounding village are not separate attractions stitched together for visitors; they form a working sacred landscape.
