Nihonmatsu Castle - Minowa Gate — Street View

Explore Nihonmatsu Castle’s rebuilt Minowa Gate, stone walls and gardens, and discover the history behind this Fukushima landmark.

At Nihonmatsu Castle, the most conspicuous gateway is also a reminder that a historic landscape can carry several ages at once. Minowa Gate rises above stone walls in Kasumigajo Park, where paths lead through gardens and up toward the former inner bailey. The gate looks like an entrance to a feudal stronghold; the structure standing here today, however, was rebuilt in 1982. To understand it is to read both the castle that was lost in the nineteenth century and the city that chose to preserve its memory.

Nihonmatsu, in Fukushima Prefecture, is a rewarding stop for travelers interested in Japan beyond its most famous surviving castles. Here there is no original multistory keep to tour. Instead, the experience unfolds on foot: through the reconstructed gateway, beside walls assembled from stone, and uphill across a site that was once both a residence and a center of government. Allow time to look back as well as ahead. The changes in elevation are central to the story.
