Lahdim Square — Street View

Meet Meknes at Lahdim Square, between Bab Mansour and the medina: a public stage for markets, evening life and the Dar Jamaï music museum.

In Meknes, Lahdim Square is less a monument to inspect than a place to read the city in motion. The broad esplanade sits between the old medina and the imperial quarter, facing the monumental Bab Mansour gate. Markets, cafés, nearby souks and evening activity give the open space a daily life that a photograph of the gate alone cannot capture. For visitors, the square is both a useful orientation point and a threshold between two parts of a city whose history stretches from an Almoravid military settlement to a royal capital.

The Prefectural Council of Tourism of Meknes describes Place El Hédim as a large square between the old city and the imperial section. Its Arabic and French tourism pages explain the name as “place of demolition”: rubble was stored here during rebuilding works. That explanation connects the plaza to the physical making of Meknes, rather than to a royal founder or a single ceremonial event. The spelling varies—Lahdim, El Hédim and El-Hedim all appear in tourism material—so travellers may encounter more than one version on maps and signs.
