Kuştul Monastery — Street View

Kuştul Monastery is an eighth-century foundation above a Maçka valley, now a fragile ruin whose steep setting demands authorized, cautious access.

Kuştul Monastery, also known as Gregorios Peristera or Hızır İlyas Monastery, was founded near today’s Şimşirli village in the Maçka district of Trabzon Province. Turkey’s provincial culture and tourism authority dates its beginnings to the middle of the eighth century; an official English catalogue gives 752 and describes a foundation around a rock church and holy spring.

The monastery occupies a commanding hill above a forested valley, following an eastern Black Sea tradition of locating religious communities in dramatic, secluded terrain. That position supplied isolation and visibility, but it now complicates conservation and visitor access.
