Ipanema refers both to a neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro’s South Zone and to its Atlantic beach. The beach runs for about two kilometres between Arpoador and Jardim de Alah, with Avenida Vieira Souto tracing much of the waterfront. Rio’s tourism authority describes it as one of the city’s best-known meeting places, used by residents and visitors for swimming, sports, outdoor music and a long walk beside the ocean. A beach day here is also a way to encounter everyday Carioca life.
The name’s global recognition comes in large part from “The Girl from Ipanema,” the Bossa Nova song by Antônio Carlos Jobim and Vinícius de Moraes. Riotur dates its fame to the 1962 composition and says it became an anthem of Brazilian popular music. The song is part of the neighborhood’s story, but the actual place is not a stage set: it is a busy residential district with shops, cafés, transit and a working shoreline.
