Inkallaqta — Street View

Explore Incallajta’s monumental kallanka, terraces and stepped wall in Bolivia, with archaeological context and honest guidance on unposted visitor hours.

Incallajta, also written Incallajta in official Bolivian sources, is a large archaeological complex in the municipality of Pocona, Carrasco Province, in Cochabamba Department. A recent regional study places it at roughly 2,950 metres above sea level in the Machajmarca canyon, on a natural slope above the river. The wider complex covers about 80 hectares, giving the site a scale that is easy to miss if attention stays only on its best-known building.

The official site project dates the citadel to around 1470 and attributes its construction to the Inca ruler Topa Inca Yupanqui, with later rebuilding under his son Huayna Cápac. That chronology is an institutional interpretation, not a date read directly from a foundation inscription. The complex belongs to the Inca expansion into the eastern valleys and the wider Collasuyu; its position linked highland routes with the fertile valleys around Pocona and Cochabamba.
