A Mountain Farmed in Steps for 1,300 YearsCascading down the flanks of the Ailao Mountains in southern Yunnan, more than 3,000 individual terraces at some locations step from forested ridgelines to the valley floor, forming one of the most extensive and enduring feats of traditional agricultural engineering anywhere in the world. Engineering Water Down a MountainThe terraces occupy a landscape with no natural lakes or major rivers to draw on directly, so the Hani solved their water problem by capturing it at the source. Forests preserved above roughly 2,000 meters elevation catch monsoon rainfall, which seeps through the mountain's geology — clefts in surface rock channel it downward, while a layer of sandstone beneath the granite traps the water and gradually releases it as natural springs. From there, a communally maintained network of four trunk canals and 392 branch ditches, totaling some 445.83 kilometers in length, distributes water down through village settlements to the terraced fields below, all without pumps or modern infrastructure. Four Elements in Vertical BalanceUNESCO's inscription specifically credits the site's "four-element" system: forest at the highest elevations for water catchment, villages built between roughly 1,400 and 2,000 meters where the Hani live in traditional thatched-roof, rammed-earth "mushroom houses," terraced paddies below the villages, and the water distribution network connecting all three. The design is not merely functional but genuinely closed-loop: villages sit literally between their water source and their fields, allowing gravity and community oversight to keep the whole system running with minimal loss. Farming Rice with Ducks, Fish, and BuffaloThe terraces are farmed using an integrated method that goes well beyond growing rice alone. Farmers raise ducks in the flooded paddies, where the birds feed on pests and fertilize the young rice plants; water buffalo and cattle are worked through the fields to churn the mud in preparation for planting; and many terraces are stocked with fish and eels, adding a second and third harvest to the same plot of land. The result is a polyculture system refined over dozens of generations to extract maximum food value from a punishingly steep and rain-battered landscape — one that would be difficult to farm at all using a single crop. A Landscape Still Inhabited and WorkedUnlike many heritage sites preserved as monuments to the past, the Honghe terraces remain a living, working landscape. The UNESCO-protected core covers 16,603.22 hectares, with a further 29,501.01-hectare buffer zone, and is home to 82 villages of between 50 and 100 households each — while the broader terrace system, spanning four counties along the southern banks of the Red River (Honghe) below the Ailao range, extends across roughly 1,000,000 acres in total. Farmers continue to plant, flood, and harvest the terraces using essentially the same techniques and social structures for canal maintenance that their ancestors developed centuries ago, making the site as much a living cultural practice as a scenic backdrop. Visiting the Terraces TodayMost visitors base themselves in Yuanyang County, where several viewpoints overlook different terrace clusters — Duoyishu, Bada, and Laohuzui among the best known — each offering dramatically different light and water conditions depending on season and time of day. The terraces are famously photogenic at sunrise, when mist and reflected light turn the flooded paddies into mirrors, and the fields are typically flooded ahead of the spring planting season, which is considered the most visually striking time to visit.
