Yazd rises from Iran’s central plateau as a city shaped by scarcity rather than defeated by it. Its earthen walls, shaded lanes, sunken courtyards, domes and windcatchers form an urban system designed for intense heat and limited water. UNESCO inscribed the Historic City of Yazd in 2017 because it preserves an exceptional living tradition of desert settlement and resource management, not simply a collection of picturesque mud-brick buildings.
Qanats are central to the story. These gently sloping underground channels carried water from aquifers to neighbourhoods, gardens and communal facilities while limiting evaporation. Traditional districts developed around individual qanat systems and social centres. Water cisterns, hammams, mosques and houses therefore belong to one infrastructure of daily life rather than a series of disconnected monuments.
