A Historical Legacy:The park's name, Hagley Park, draws inspiration from the English country estate of Lord Lyttelton, who chaired the Canterbury Association that spearheaded the establishment of the Church of England settlement in Christchurch. The area initially consisted of scrubby grasslands, creeks feeding into the swampy Avon River, and a cluster of huts known as Settlers Corner, where British settlers first made their homes in the region. The settlers wasted no time in clearing and planting, dedicating this land "forever as a public park, and open for the recreation and enjoyment of the public."
