South of Baku, the rocky uplands of Gobustan preserve an archaeological landscape that is best read slowly. The UNESCO-listed property is not a single rock panel or a conventional indoor museum: it encompasses three areas of a semi-desert plateau, where engraved stones sit among traces of caves, settlements and burial places. The visual experience moves between open ground and close detail. A line cut into a rock face can be modest at first glance, but its place within a much longer record of human presence gives it unusual weight.
UNESCO reports more than 6,000 rock engravings in the cultural landscape and describes evidence of human use from the Upper Palaeolithic through the Middle Ages. The inscription of the property in 2007 recognized the scale and continuity of this record. The exact age and meaning of individual images are not always simple to establish; the site should not be presented as if every carving had one date or one agreed interpretation. Its value lies in the breadth of the evidence and the opportunity it offers to study how communities lived in, used and represented this environment.
