Darband Rashi Cave lies in Iran’s Gilan Province, on the north side of a tributary canyon within the Sefidrud river system. Archaeologists describe it as the first known Lower Paleolithic cave occupation in Iran, a status that makes the site important to research on early human movement across the Iranian Plateau.
V. Jahani identified the cave in 2005, and subsequent archaeological work reported Acheulean stone artefacts and animal fossils. The south-facing chamber is approximately 21 metres long with an entrance around seven metres wide. These physical facts are documented; the age of the archaeological deposit itself has not yet been securely established.
