Danxia Mountain, or Danxiashan, rises in Renhua County in northern Guangdong, near Shaoguan. The official scenic-area administration describes a geopark of about 292 square kilometres, with Danxia landforms concentrated across roughly 180 square kilometres. Its main peak, Bazhai, reaches 619.2 metres. These figures describe a broad protected landscape, not a single summit that can be covered in a short stop.
The red cliffs are made largely of near-horizontal layers of sandstone and conglomerate. Over long geological periods, uplift, weathering, flowing water and gravity-driven collapses shaped steep scarps, isolated peaks, stone pillars and ravines. The result is not simply a red mountain: the repeated contrast between flat tops, abrupt sides and gentler lower slopes gives the landform its distinctive profile.
