ABOUT Danxia Mountain

In northern Guangdong, Danxia Mountain concentrates the essence of the "danxia" landscape: red rock walls, spires, natural arches and viewpoints overlooking the Jinjiang River. A perfect destination for photographers, hikers and the geologically curious.

what is Danxia Mountain and why is it special?

Danxia Mountain (丹霞山) is the emblem of the Danxia landscape, a type of relief formed by red sandstones and conglomerates that, after millions of years of tectonic uplift and erosion, gave rise to vertical cliffs, pillars, mesas and gorges with clean contours. Unlike calcareous karst, here the rock is siliciclastic; thus the visual result is reminiscent of karst, but the geological origin is different.

The term "danxia" was born in this region and today designates several sites in southern and central China, with Danxia Mountain as a historical and scientific reference. The reddish strata were deposited in fluvial environments during the Mesozoic. Over time, the uplift of the terrain and the combined action of weathering, rainfall and runoff opened up cleavages and shaped volumes. The result is a natural architecture of reds, oranges and ochers that varies according to the light: from bright copper to soft violet at sunset.

What to see in the park

Jinjiang River Gallery: a boat ride allows you to see, from the water, the scale of the cliffs and the curves of the valley. Ideal for photos with reflections and to understand the fluvial "scar" that sculpted the massif.

Zhanglao Peak (main viewpoints): 360° panoramic views of the mosaic of peaks and red walls. Sunrise light recommended. Yangyuan Stone: iconic monolith resulting from differential erosion; photogenic symbol of the park. Walkways and hillside temples: stepped paths, natural balconies and small shrines connecting culture and landscape. Hanging arches and caves: rocky hollows and bridges where stratification and hollowing processes can be appreciated.

How to get to Danxia Mountain

The gateway is Shaoguan (Guangdong province).

By high-speed train: frequent connections from Guangzhou, Shenzhen and other cities in the Pearl River Delta to Shaoguan East.

Transfer to the park: tourist buses and cabs operate from the station to the Danxia scenic area. In the grounds, an internal bus system distributes visitors to the various trailheads, piers and cable cars (where available).

By road: well-maintained highways connect Shaoguan to nearby capitals; an option if you are traveling in a group or with a driver.

Best time to visit

Autumn and winter (October-April): clearer skies and long visibility for panoramic views.
Spring and summer (May-September): more humidity and likelihood of rain; after storms, the red rocks glow and the river flows downstream, perfect for dramatic photos. Caution for heat and slipping.

Where to stay and facilities

The most convenient base is Shaoguan, with a range of hotels and restaurants. Near the park entrances there are guesthouses and simple accommodations designed for those looking for sunrises and sunsets without long transfers.

The scenic area has marked restrooms, hydration points, basic restaurants and bilingual signage along the main trails.

Danxia Mountain summarizes the beauty of China's red landscapes in a single park: didactic geology, well-marked trails, intimate temples and the river that organizes everything. With simple planning and a sense of respect, the visit becomes a lesson in time, color and relief that lingers long after leaving the Jinjiang Valley.
