Castle Cornet stands at the entrance to St Peter Port harbour, where its position has made it part of Guernsey’s maritime story for roughly eight centuries. The island’s official tourism guide describes it as a former tidal island, once separated from the town by water and now linked to the harbour emplacement. The setting is not incidental: the fort looks outward toward the sea and inward toward the port that it helped guard. From the walls, visitors can read the relationship between island, harbour and town.
Its long history is easier to understand as a sequence of changing roles than as one unaltered fortress. The castle served as a defensive position and later became part of the island’s government and military life. The local tourism authority says it remained separated from St Peter Port by the tide until the late nineteenth century. That former isolation explains why the approach and the link to the breakwater are central to the visitor experience today—and why repairs to the bridge can temporarily determine whether the public can enter at all.
