In Bardejov, the square gives you a way to read the town before opening a guidebook. Narrow-fronted houses line a broad rectangle, a church closes one end, and an old town hall stands in the middle. The arrangement is elegant, but it was also practical: this was a place to trade, govern and meet, in a town whose streets and defences still reveal the shape of medieval life in northeastern Slovakia.
Come for the square, then walk beyond it. Bardejov rewards visitors who take time to see the basilica, enter the museum and follow the surviving fortifications. Its heritage also includes a Jewish suburb outside the medieval core and, nearby, a spa settlement with an open-air museum. These places tell different stories; together they make a much fuller visit than a photograph of the town hall.
