Apostle Islands National Lakeshore — Street View

A guide to Ojibwe history, island lighthouses, sea caves and the conditions that shape every visit.

On Lake Superior, distance can feel different. A shoreline that looks close from Bayfield may require a boat, a weather window and a plan for cold water. Apostle Islands National Lakeshore gathers 21 islands and a stretch of mainland shore into a landscape of sandstone cliffs, forests, beaches and historic lights. The place rewards curiosity, but it asks for respect: this is open water, not a sheltered city park.

The National Park Service says the Ojibwe are the original inhabitants of the area, with written and oral histories describing travel among the islands and a main village on Madeline Island. Seasonal life followed the resources of the lake and forest: fishing, hunting, gathering wild rice and collecting maple sap. A visit becomes richer when this Indigenous presence is treated as a continuing history, not a prelude to European settlement.
