The old heart of AntalyaKaleiçi — literally 'within the castle' — is the historic old town of Antalya, in the Muratpaşa district on Turkey's Mediterranean coast. Enclosed by land and sea walls and wrapped around a Roman inner harbour, its lanes and houses carry the traces of the city's long history down to the present day. A protected quarterIn 1972 the inner harbour and the Kaleiçi quarter were placed under protection as a conservation ('SİT') zone for their intact historic fabric. The restoration of the 'Antalya–Kaleiçi Complex' earned a FIJET 'Golden Apple' tourism award in 1984. Today the quarter has become a lively centre of hotels, guesthouses, restaurants, bars and shops. The traditional housesKaleiçi's streets are narrow, running mostly uphill from the harbour toward the outer walls. The old houses are built of rubble stone bound with timber, each with a street front and a hidden garden. The ground floor served for storage and kitchen; the lighter upper floor was for living, its street face marked by projecting timber oriels — the cumba — decorated with carved woodwork. Many houses have been carefully restored to their original form. LandmarksAmong the historic mosques of the quarter, the most famous is the Yivli Minare Camii (the Fluted Minaret Mosque), whose minaret has become a symbol of Antalya itself, rising above the old rooftops.
