About Tierradentro Archaeological Park

Tierradentro: painted underground tombs in Colombia’s Andes

Tierradentro Archaeological Park protects clusters of hypogea—funerary chambers cut into volcanic rock—across steep Andean ridges in Cauca. Spiral stairways descend to chambers whose columns, niches and red, black and white geometric paintings reproduce aspects of houses for the dead. Stone statues and surface remains add evidence for a society that lived in the region more than 1,400 years ago.

The UNESCO World Heritage property is distributed rather than enclosed in one museum compound. Scientific investigation began in 1936 with work by Georg Burg and José Pérez de Barradas, although local communities had long known the tombs. Research continues to refine chronology and meaning; painted motifs should not be assigned invented translations or named owners.

Five sectors, demanding terrain

The admission route includes Alto de Segovia, Alto de San Andrés, Alto del Duende, Alto de El Aguacate and El Tablón. Segovia contains the largest concentration of accessible hypogea, while El Aguacate requires a strenuous ridge walk. El Tablón is known for stone sculpture rather than underground chambers. Museums near the entrance provide archaeological and ethnographic context.

This is a mountain hike as well as a heritage visit. Rain turns paths slippery, stairways into tombs are steep and altitude and humidity affect pace. Attempting all sectors in one day is unrealistic for many visitors; prioritise Segovia and San Andrés, then add routes according to weather and fitness.

  • Use closed shoes, rain protection, water and a charged phone.
  • Enter tombs only where attendants permit and never touch painted walls.
  • Do not use flash where prohibited; light and contact accelerate deterioration.
  • Travel in daylight and ask locally about current road and security conditions.

Verified 2026 hours, prices and closures

ICANH publishes opening from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on operating days. For the second half of 2026, scheduled closures include 1 September, 20 October, 3 November and 1 December. Weather or local conditions can add closures, so confirm directly before a long journey.

The 2026 general rate is COP 50,000 for Colombians aged 12 and over and foreign residents, COP 25,000 for eligible reduced categories, and COP 75,000 for non-resident foreign visitors. One ticket covers the five named sectors. Exemptions include defined age, local-community and accredited categories.

Arrival and community context

The park base is at El Escaño near San Andrés de Pisimbalá in the municipality of Inzá. Road journeys from Popayán or Neiva are long and can be affected by landslides; build flexibility into the itinerary. Accommodation and food are supplied by independent local businesses rather than ICANH.

Tierradentro is most powerful when approached slowly. Each descent moves from the mountain landscape into an architecture of memory, while the climb back makes clear the labour required to create and revisit these chambers. Conservation and community conditions, not a rushed checklist, should determine the journey.
