Mladeč Caves: an Ice Age human record beneath central Moravia

The Mladeč Caves near Litovel combine a compact show-cave route with an archaeological record important to the study of early modern humans in Europe. Water dissolved Devonian limestone beneath Třesín hill, creating chambers, narrow passages and mineral formations. Sediments later preserved human remains, stone and bone artefacts and Ice Age animal material.

Scientific excavations began after the cave was opened in the nineteenth century. Human fossils from Mladeč are associated with the early Upper Palaeolithic and have been dated to roughly 31,000 years ago. Their research history is complicated: early digging disturbed parts of the deposit and some collections were lost during the Second World War. Modern claims must therefore distinguish securely documented material from old speculation.

What the guided route reveals

All public entry is through a timed guided tour of about 380 metres lasting approximately 40 minutes. The route passes sculpted limestone spaces and areas connected with the archaeological discoveries. Interpretation explains both natural cave formation and human use; it is not an underground reconstruction of a permanent home.

The cave climate is cool even in summer. Steps, damp floors and confined sections make sturdy footwear and a warm layer useful. Visitors with limited mobility should contact the administration before buying because natural geometry restricts barrier-free access.

Official 2026 schedule and prices

The Czech Cave Administration’s 2026 calendar varies by month. In September the cave operates Tuesday through Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.; the stated final time is the last tour, not building closure. October runs Tuesday–Sunday 9:00–3:00, November offers weekday tours at 10:00 and 1:00, and December is closed. Always select the exact date in the official calendar because weekly closures and holidays differ.

The 2026 adult ticket is CZK 200, reduced CZK 160 and child ticket CZK 100; off-season amounts shown in brackets on the official tariff may be lower. Family and organised-group rates are available, with eligibility defined by the cave administration.

Planning the surface visit

The address is Mladeč 84, 783 21 Chudobín u Litovle. Parking and public-transport connections should be checked with the cave page, allowing time for the walk to the entrance. Protected landscape rules continue above ground: do not enter unmarked openings or disturb bats and vegetation.

Mladeč’s value lies in the intersection of geology and human history. Limestone created the archive, sediment preserved it and imperfect early excavation shaped what scholars can still know. A responsible tour presents the fossils as evidence with limits—not as certainty about named individuals—and makes those limits part of an unusually compelling journey into the Palaeolithic.
