About Lesbos Petrified Forest

Lesbos Petrified Forest: an ancient ecosystem preserved by volcanism

Western Lesbos contains fossil trunks, roots, leaves, seeds and branches from a subtropical forest buried by volcanic material roughly 20 million years ago. Silica-rich fluids gradually replaced organic tissues while preserving microscopic structure and growth patterns. The result is not a collection of carved stones but geological evidence for plants, climate and explosive volcanism in the early Miocene Aegean.

The protected natural monument is distributed across a broad landscape rather than contained in one fenced grove. It forms a defining part of the UNESCO Global Geopark of Lesvos. Standing fossil trunks with root systems preserved in growth position are especially valuable because they record an ecosystem where it lived, while transported trunks document eruption and water processes.

Museum first, then the fossil parks

The Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest in Sigri, founded in 1994, is the strongest starting point. Exhibitions explain fossilisation, volcanic evolution and modern geohazard research, allowing visitors to identify what they later see outdoors. The museum also supplies guidance for routes to the separate parks.

Bali Alonia, Sigri and Plaka parks offer marked paths among fossil localities, while the marine park at Nissiopi is reached only through an organised seasonal excursion. Road-cut discoveries along the Kalloni–Sigri route have added new specimens, but stopping outside authorised areas is unsafe and collecting is illegal.

  • Confirm which parks and boat excursions are operating on the day.
  • Carry water, hat and shoes suitable for hot volcanic terrain.
  • Never touch, climb or remove even a small fossil fragment.
  • Photograph labels as well as trunks so geological context is not lost.

Verified current access

The Lesvos Geopark currently publishes daily opening from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. for the Petrified Forest parks. Conditions and hours are seasonal and may vary between the museum, land parks and marine excursion, so contact the museum in Sigri before a long drive. The official telephone is +30 22530 54434.

Sigri lies in remote western Lesbos. The drive from Mytilene crosses the island and should not be underestimated; bus frequency is limited, especially outside summer. A car gives access to multiple parks, but drivers must use marked parking and never block the narrow road. Strong wind can cancel Nissiopi boats.

Reading deep time responsibly

Shade is limited and summer fire restrictions can close countryside routes. Stay on paths, take all litter away and obey staff around active conservation. A single park rarely represents the full story, so combine indoor interpretation with at least one outdoor trail rather than racing between photo stops.

The Petrified Forest changes a Lesbos journey from scenery into deep-time reporting. Rooted trees locate a vanished forest, minerals preserve cellular detail and volcanic layers explain its burial. The evidence is dramatic enough without myths: careful observation reveals how an ecosystem became a geological archive and why protection must extend across an entire landscape.
