Historic Silver Mine in Tarnowskie Góry: Poland’s underground UNESCO experience

The Historic Silver Mine in Tarnowskie Góry offers access to part of an enormous lead, silver and zinc mining landscape beneath Upper Silesia. The visitor route combines a surface museum, historic underground workings and a short boat passage. Its importance reaches beyond mineral extraction: the mine’s drainage system became an innovative source of water for towns and industry.

Mining, water and industrial innovation

Tarnowskie Góry developed in one of central Europe’s major metal-producing regions. Mining expanded from the sixteenth century and faced an unusually difficult problem: vast quantities of groundwater entered workings beneath a relatively flat plateau. Over three centuries, miners and engineers created a network of shafts, galleries, pumping stations and drainage adits to control the water.

UNESCO records more than 50 kilometres of principal drainage tunnels and around 150 kilometres of secondary adits, access passages, shafts and extraction areas within the wider system. Steam pumping and gravity drainage supported mining while water was redirected for public and industrial use. Parts of that system continue to supply drinking water, giving the heritage a rare surviving function.

What the underground tour includes

The official visitor regulations describe a visit of approximately one hour and 45 minutes, including about 60 minutes underground at a depth of 40.5 metres. The underground route extends for 1,740 metres, of which approximately 270 metres is traveled by boat through a water passage. Elevators provide the descent, but some sections have reduced headroom and require visitors to bend.

The experience begins in the surface museum before entering the workings. Machinery, geology and mining methods prepare visitors for the tunnels below. A separate open-air collection of steam machinery adds context, while the nearby Black Trout Adit is a distinct attraction with its own schedule and ticket.

World Heritage recognition

UNESCO inscribed the Tarnowskie Góry Lead-Silver-Zinc Mine and its Underground Water Management System in 2017 under criteria (i), (ii) and (iv). The property includes extensive underground infrastructure and selected surface features. It is recognized for hydraulic engineering, the exchange of mining expertise across Europe and the integration of drainage with regional water supply.

Verified 2026 hours and prices

For individual visitors, the Historic Silver Mine currently lists daily visiting hours of 09:00–15:00 from September through December. The site closes on January 1, Easter Sunday, November 1, December 24–26 and December 31. Tour departure times can change according to reservations, so advance online booking is strongly recommended.

The 2026 online tariff lists a standard ticket at PLN 84, reduced at PLN 73 and a senior ticket at PLN 73. Tours in a foreign language are listed at PLN 115 standard and PLN 105 reduced. Family and eligibility-based rates are also available. Arrive 15 minutes before the booked time; late arrival may result in reassignment or loss of the tour.

Safety and comfort underground

The mine remains close to 10°C throughout the year. Bring a warm layer and flat, secure footwear even in summer. The operator advises visitors with claustrophobia, spinal conditions or cardiac problems to seek medical advice. Accessibility differs between the Silver Mine and Black Trout Adit, so contact the venue before booking if mobility support is needed. Follow guides at all times and never leave the marked route.
