ABOUT Castellana Caves

Discover the mesmerizing underworld of the Castellana Caves, a remarkable complex of karstic cavities nestled in the heart of Castellana Grotte, Puglia, Italy. These caverns, both a geological wonder and a tourist attraction, offer a fascinating glimpse into the intricate beauty of nature's creations, captivating explorers and visitors alike.

Dating back to the Upper Cretaceous period, approximately ninety million years ago, when Puglia was submerged beneath an ancient sea teeming with marine life, the story of Castellana Caves begins. Over millions of years, the remains of marine organisms accumulated on the seabed, forming layers of limestone several kilometers thick. As the land gradually rose over the course of millions of years, extensive fractures formed within the rigid limestone mass. The relentless force of underground water, seeping through these fractures, slowly dissolved the limestone, widening the gaps and creating a network of caverns and passages.

Discovery and Exploration

While the natural entrance to the cave, sprawling network of limestone caves, has existed for generations, it wasn't until January 23, 1938, that the entire cave system was discovered by the speleologist Franco Anelli. Since then, ongoing exploration and conservation efforts have revealed only a fraction of the caves' secrets, with new passages and chambers awaiting discovery beneath the surface.

The natural entrance to the caves is an enormous chasm sixty meters deep called "the Grave". Spanning approximately three kilometers, the Castellana Caves boast a stunning array of geological formations and mythical namesakes, from the awe-inspiring "Grave", reached the edge of the sinkhole, to the ethereal Grotta Bianca. Visitors embark on a captivating journey through these underground marvels, passing through chambers adorned with stalactites, stalagmites, and eccentric formations that seemingly defy gravity.

The Franco Anelli Speleological Museum

Immerse yourself in the rich history and scientific significance of the caves at the Franco Anelli Speleological Museum, inaugurated in 2000 in honor of the renowned speleologist Franco Anelli. This educational institution offers a deeper understanding of the caves' formation and evolution, serving as a hub for speleological research and conservation efforts.

From awe-inspiring geological formations to immersive multimedia experiences, the Castellana Caves offer unforgettable adventures for visitors of all ages. Don't miss the chance to witness the mesmerizing Hell in the Cave spectacle, a unique underground aerial performance that has captivated audiences since 2008.
