About Bar Cordano

Bar Cordano: a century of conversation in central Lima

Bar Cordano has served food, coffee and political conversation in Lima’s historic centre since 1905. Located at Jirón Áncash 202, directly behind Peru’s Government Palace, it occupies a strategic corner between the Plaza Mayor and the monumental complex of San Francisco. That position helped turn an everyday restaurant into a witness to public life.

Peru’s state news agency records that Italian immigrants Vigilio Botano and brothers Luis and Antonio Cordano founded the business on 13 January 1905. The room later welcomed politicians, writers, artists, journalists and palace workers. Lima’s official tourism service names Mario Vargas Llosa, Chabuca Granda, Juan Velasco Alvarado and Mario Testino among its notable patrons.

What to order and what to notice

Bar Cordano is known for traditional, straightforward dishes rather than experimental tasting menus. The butifarra—bread filled with seasoned country-style ham and salsa criolla—is its emblematic order. Sandwiches, coffee and classic Peruvian plates make it suitable for breakfast or lunch, but menus and prices should be checked on arrival.

The interior matters as much as the plate. Dark wood, mirrors, old photographs and closely set tables preserve the atmosphere of an early twentieth-century city café. It is still a business, not a staged museum, so visitors should avoid monopolizing tables merely for photographs. Ordering something and observing the room at its normal pace is the most authentic approach.

A stop within UNESCO-listed Lima

The Historic Centre of Lima is a UNESCO World Heritage property, and Cordano sits within its most walkable monumental core. A practical route begins at Plaza Mayor, passes the cathedral and Government Palace, stops at the bar, then continues to San Francisco. Street closures and official ceremonies can affect access around the palace.

As in any busy historic centre, keep phones and cameras secure and use registered transport after dark. Travellers should follow current municipal and national safety advice rather than relying on old neighbourhood descriptions. Daytime is the simplest time to combine the restaurant with surrounding heritage sites.

Hours and practical details

Visita Lima currently lists Bar Cordano as open Monday through Saturday from 08:00 to 18:00 and publishes the telephone number (01) 427 0181. Restaurants can change hours for holidays, private events or operational reasons, so confirm directly before making a special journey. Sunday opening should not be assumed.

  • Go early for a calmer breakfast or arrive before the main lunch rush.
  • Try a traditional order, but verify current menu options and dietary ingredients.
  • Pair the stop with Plaza Mayor and San Francisco rather than travelling across the city for one photograph.
  • Ask permission before photographing staff or other customers.

Bar Cordano remains relevant because its history is still being used. Presidents and poets form part of its mythology, but the lasting attraction is more democratic: a wooden table, a sandwich, a waiter crossing the same room and the institutional city moving outside. It offers travellers a tangible taste of Lima without pretending that the past has stopped.
