About Almadén Mining Park

Almadén Mining Park: inside the history of mercury

Almadén’s mine shaped global economies for centuries. Its cinnabar deposits supplied mercury on a scale unmatched by almost any other source, linking a small town in Castilla-La Mancha with silver production across the Atlantic. The mining park now allows visitors to descend into historic workings and examine furnaces, machinery, labour and the serious human consequences of extracting a toxic metal.

A World Heritage industry

UNESCO inscribed the Heritage of Mercury: Almadén and Idrija in 2012 under criteria (ii) and (iv). Almadén had produced mercury since antiquity; Idrija in present-day Slovenia began after mercury was found there in 1490. Together they preserve the most complete evidence of the world’s two largest mercury-mining centres.

From the Renaissance onward, mercury became strategically important because it was used to recover silver from ores in the Americas. Trade therefore connected extraction technology, finance and coerced labour across continents. A serious account must also recognise toxicity: mercury damages human health and the environment, and the miners’ hospital is part of the heritage because occupational disease accompanied production.

What the standard visit includes

The underground route descends into historic mine galleries under controlled conditions, using modern safety equipment. Interpretation follows changes in extraction and transport, and a mining train returns visitors along part of the route. On the surface, the mining interpretation centre, San Teodoro–San Aquilino shafts and metallurgical installations explain the full production chain.

The aludel furnaces are particularly important. Their form reflects technology used to condense mercury vapour after cinnabar was heated. The Real Hospital de Mineros adds medical and social history, moving the story beyond machines to the workers and families whose lives depended on the mine.

Current hours and booking conditions

The official regional tourism page lists the park Tuesday–Sunday. From May through September it opens 10:00–14:00 and 16:30–19:30; from October through April, 10:00–14:00 and 15:30–18:30. Mondays normally close, as do specified holidays. Underground tours operate at set times and capacity is limited.

The park offers several products rather than one universal ticket. Its current full-day “integral” visit starts at 10:00, lasts about five hours and lists €28 at the ticket office or €27 online for adults, with a minimum group of eight and purchase at least 72 hours in advance. Standard shorter routes have different prices and conditions, so choose the itinerary on the official booking site rather than quoting the integral price for every visit.

Safety and travel planning

Visitors must follow staff instructions and wear the provided helmet and other equipment. Confirm age, mobility, health and footwear requirements before purchase; underground humidity, enclosed spaces and uneven surfaces are not suitable for everyone. Eating is prohibited inside the mine and limited to designated areas on the site.

Almadén is reached by road from Ciudad Real or Córdoba, while bus and rail options require timetable planning. Allow a full day and avoid scheduling a tight connection after the underground tour. The park’s documentary and social spaces deserve time equal to the descent.

The most valuable visit links spectacular engineering with a critical understanding of mercury. Almadén’s global importance rests not only on how much metal it produced, but on the international economic system, technical innovation and human cost that production created.
